A student who is late for a class for 15 minutes or more shall be noted as absent”and teachers can stop them from attending class. Relevant faculty member’s permission for an early leave is required in case a student has to leave early.

4.A student who is unable to attend a class for any reason shall ask his/her counsellor for a leave, and shall provide a leave slip to relevant faculty member. In case of an emergency that causes a student unable to attend a class, he/she shall submit a deferred explanation for absence. In case of sickness, clinical reports shall be submitted. Faculty members shall keep a record of students’ attendance, and clearly note down specific situations of students’ absence, lateness, leaving early from classes, as well as their leaves for private reasons, for public affairs, for sickness, etc. In addition, faculty members should contact relevant counsellor(s) in case a student is frequently absent from classes.

5.Faculty members shall confirm reports of students absence of a semester (all absences, including permitted and unpermitted ones). When the total hours of a student’s absences add up to 1/3 of the total class hours of a course, or when a student has been absent without permission for 3 or more times for a course in one semester, the student shall be disqualified from the final exam and shall directly take a make-up exam for the course. Those students who never show up in classroom for a course shall be disqualified from all evaluations and exams of the course.

II. Exams and Course Evaluation

1Scores for each course are centesimal: 90-100 for excellent”, 80-89 for very good, 70-79 for good, 60-69 for pass, and below 60 for fail.

2Generally, the final grading consists of 3 parts: attendance score, regular score, and final exam score.

Classroom attendance accounts for at least 10% in astudent’s final grading for a course. 50% of attendance score will be deducted for oneunpermitted absence, 25% of attendance score will be deducted for one absence for a private reason, 20% for a lateness, and no deduction for absences for sickness or public affairs.

Regular scoreis based on students’ classroom performance, grading of mid-term exam, and assignment grading. The criteria for each course are defined by relevant faculty members.

For each course, a final exam will be organized in the end of relevant faculty member’s teaching sessions. The form of exams are decided by relevant faculty members, varying from exam papers, listening tests, speaking tests, or term papers.

3.There will be one make-up exam for each fail. Usually the make-up takes place during the second week after the final. For make-up exams, only “pass” or fail will be marked, instead of centesimal scores.

4A student who isunable to takea final exam due to special circumstances can apply for a deferred exam, and take the deferred exam after getting a formal permission. The result of the deferred exam will be graded centesimally.

Deferred exams and make-up exams will be scheduled duringa same period, and no make-up exam will be arranged for deferred exams. Those who don’t take final exams without application for deferred exams are considered to be givingup the final exams, and shall directly take the make-up exams, with their gradings marked only as pass or fail.
